Hello. Welcome to the '24-'25 school year. My name is Mr. Melville. This is my twelfth year in the San Lorenzo district. I am extremely grateful to be a high school English teacher here, especially since this is the same district from which I graduated in 2004.
Twenty years have gone by so fast. There are so many people who helped me get to this point in time. I thank every one of them. From professors at Chabot and CSUEB to friends and family who supported me, I am one lucky dude. I'm even blessed to be here writing this very sentence. At age 20, I nearly died falling off a cliff.
A former drama teacher I had in middle school took a chance on me when I started teaching at Edendale. At that time I had no idea how to teach an English class or how to connect with students. But this guy saw potential in me and convinced the principal to give me another chance. Had that not happened I have no idea where I'd be teaching right now, or even if I would still be a teacher. Thank you, Mr. Ed. You are the father I wish I had in life.
I aim to teach my students the value of second chances, not letting opportunities pass you by, and how literature and creative writing can enhance our lives.
I have a loving, gorgeous wife and three little ones at home. The best part of my day is when I walk through the door and hear little footsteps patter down the hallway to me.
Hope everyone reading this is taking care of themselves and each other.
Memento mori.
-Mr. Melville
