English Learners Advisory Council

Who is an English Learner (EL)?
  • First language is a language other than English 
  • Speaks English, but not quite fluently yet
  • Struggles with academic English in reading and writing (Long-Term ELs)
  • New to the country and speaks limited English (Newcomers)
 
What is English Learner Advisory Council (ELAC)?
A meeting where parents can come get involved and advise the staff on English Learners' needs. The ELAC is there to help support the EL program, support our EL students and families, and celebrate our EL student achievements (academic success, Reclassification, etc.). 
 
What does ELAC do?
  • Make recommendations to the School Site Council about programs and services for EL students (SPSA)
  • Helps with creating school-wide needs assessment
  • Emphasize the importance of school attendance
  • Learn how to best support your EL/RFEP student and how to encourage their academic success (grades, graduation, college, etc.)
 
Who can be a part of ELAC?
All parents with a student attending a school where an ELAC is formed are welcome to attend. Parents of ELs or RFEP (Reclassified as Fluent) students are especially encouraged to attend and participate.
